Counseling/Counseling Psychology Program
The Counseling/Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Utah offers both masters and doctoral degree programs in the following program specialities:
It is these three individual areas that admit students and specify particular courses of study.
Program faculty have diverse research and teaching interests in areas including cross-cultural and multicultural counseling and education, treatment and prevention of child, adolescent, and adult depression, substance abuse, efficacy and effectiveness of psychotherapy, career counseling, training and supervision, adult development and aging, adoption, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender issues, prevention and treatment of childhood trauma, gender issues, and feminist therapy.
This program has collaborative relationships with numerous schools and agencies, with practice settings on campus and in the community.
Counseling Psychology (Ph.D.): The Counseling Psychology doctoral program at the University of Utah is known for its emphasis on the scientist/practitioner model of training. The program has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1957. Successful completion of the program earns the Ph.D. degree and prepares students to meet basic eligibility requirements for professional licensure.
Professional Counseling (M.Ed.): The Professional Counseling Specialty is designed to prepare students for entry level counseling positions in inpatient, outpatient, and community mental health and human service agencies. This specialty is currently designed to meet the educational requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Utah, and is congruent with national standards for master's level licensure in most other jurisdictions across the country.
School Counseling (M.Ed.): The Master's degree (M.Ed.) in Educational Psychology with a Specialization in School Counseling is currently designed to meet the educational requirements for licensure from the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) as a Professional School Counselor.
